1.Tell me about yourself. Something unique and dynamic. Not the generic things that someone can find out on social media. But also add your name (first name) and age, please.
Hi, my name is Heaven and I’m 37. I was adopted since I was a couple of weeks old and only 3 years ago I found my birth father. What you see with me is what you get. I’m real, honest and I’m passionate about everything I do.
2.What gave you the motivation to start your journey?
When I found/met my birth father it hit a lightbulb in me where a piece of me that was missing was fulfilled. Seeing him and learning my heritage meant the world to me
3.How did you start? (Did you start by exercising or did you clean up your diet first? And did you clean up your diet gradually or did you jump right into it?
I began doing Zumba the DVD at home, diet came later as I was trying to get used to being active. My diet changed like with the fads… all veggie… all meat… the mayo clinic… etc tried all kinds of fads
4.What’s the hardest thing about your lifestyle change?
The hardest thing was finding the right diet that worked for me… not everything that works for one works for the other.
5.What has kept you going even when you didn’t feel like it or when you felt like it’s not working out how you planned?
What keeps me going is all the pain I have endured. Physical, emotional… mental pain… It was never-ending.
6.Do you have any regrets about where you had to get to change your lifestyle around? And did you have to evaluate yourself to find the source of your weight gain?
I have no regrets… of course, I will say I wished I started earlier and I had the discipline I do now sooner. But I believe everything happened when it needed to! The source of my weight gain was me feeding into my emotions.
7.Why is/was this time different from the other times you’ve tried to lose weight? What gave you the strength to not give up this round?
This time I had motivation and encouragement from my dad. Meeting and knowing he was still alive saved my life.
8.What has been your happiest or the most rewarding moments since you’ve started your journey?
The most rewarding and happiest time for me is when I’m out doing obstacle course racing and running. Just doing the things I was never able to do as a kid.
9.What advice would you give someone who is thinking about or just started their lifestyle change?
My advice is that we all have something that drives us even if it is brief that is when the fire is lit for it and when it’s lit that is when you need to continue to add the tools to keep it going. Find that fire and light it up!!
10.What is the ultimate goal? Do you have a specific weight goal? Is there something you want to achieve after getting to your ideal place?
To be honest my goal is to not give up. To keep going and not focus on the numbers but focus on how I feel.
Remember the first step is trying and the next step is not giving up when things get hard!
